9 must-have elements of university website development

A university website in 2026 has one job: help a prospective student decide, quickly, on a phone, whether your program is right for them. Everything else is secondary. These are the nine elements every serious university website has in 2026, and the specific target each one needs to hit.

1. Does the program page answer the question in the first two sentences?

Prospective students type "how long is UW's BSN program" into Google or ChatGPT. The winning page opens with "The BSN at [University] is a four-year, 128-credit program. Clinical rotations begin in year two at four Seattle-area partner hospitals." That is the sentence AI assistants extract and cite. Everything else can follow.

2. Are Core Web Vitals green on real devices?

Google's field data (CrUX) shows only about 34% of .edu domains pass all three Core Web Vitals thresholds on mobile as of Q2 2025. Passing means LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1 for at least 75% of real user visits. The gap between passing and failing is roughly a 15% conversion difference on RFI submissions per BrightEdge's higher-ed benchmarks.

3. Is every program page marked up with EducationalOccupationalProgram schema?

This is the single highest-leverage AI-visibility change a university can make. Add the schema with the exact program name, credential, duration, credit count, cost, and provider. AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity all use this markup to decide which programs to name in a comparative answer.

4. Is the RFI form under six fields?

5. Does the site conform to WCAG 2.2 AA?

Practically: color contrast at least 4.5:1, focus indicators on every interactive element, alt text on every content image, closed captions on every video, and PDFs remediated or replaced with HTML.

6. Is there a functional site search that returns program pages first?

Students do not browse .edu sites. They search. Site search must be typo-tolerant ("nurseng" returns nursing), program-aware (program pages outrank news), and instrumented so admissions can see the top queries every month.

7. Are program facts identical everywhere?

Program name, credits, tuition, start dates, and accreditor status must match on the university website, Common App, Peterson's, College Scorecard, and your Google Business Profile. Even one inconsistent number reduces AI systems' confidence in citing your school by roughly 40% per Backlinko's 2025 entity-consistency research.

8. Is the thank-you page a real page with a video?

9. Is the funnel instrumented end to end?

You should be able to answer, in one query, "how many applicants who visited the BSN page in September ended up enrolled?" Most universities cannot. What to fix first if you can only do three
