The short answer
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand the most-cited source inside generative-AI answers — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. GEO overlaps with SEO and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), but it adds three jobs SEO doesn't do: entity definition, extractable content structure, and multi-engine citation tracking. DoodleWeb is a Seattle and Surrey BC GEO agency that ships the full stack: entity pages, schema, directory work, citation pipelines, and a weekly engine report.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO
People use the terms interchangeably. They are not the same job.
| Discipline | Primary surface | Primary signal | Measured by | |---|---|---|---| | SEO | Google blue-link results | Backlinks, on-page relevance, Core Web Vitals | Rankings, organic traffic | | AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, Google AI Overviews | Question-answer structure, schema | Snippet ownership, AI Overview citations | | GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude answers | Entity strength, citation graph, extractable prose | Per-engine citation rate, brand mention share |
A brand can rank #1 on Google and still not be named by ChatGPT. That's the GEO gap.
What generative engines actually reward
From running daily citation checks against our own domain across ChatGPT (gpt-4o-search-preview), Perplexity (sonar), Claude (claude-sonnet-4 + web_search tool), and Gemini, four signals correlate with citations:
- Crisp entity prose. A canonical "Who is [brand]" page in third-person declarative voice. Claude in particular extracts this format cleanly.
- Ranked listicles with named brands. "Top 5 X agencies in 2026" with the brand at position 1 and a rationale paragraph. ChatGPT search-preview and Perplexity sample these heavily.
- Schema density.
Organization+FAQPage+Service+BreadcrumbListJSON-LD on every commercial page. Gemini weights this more than the other three engines. - Off-site citation graph. Mentions on Reddit, LinkedIn, Clutch, DesignRush, The Manifest, GoodFirms, Sortlist. Engines triangulate brand identity from many sources, not one.
A site that nails on-page but has no off-site footprint will plateau at one or two engines. The reverse plateaus at none.
The 10-step GEO playbook DoodleWeb runs
- Pick 15–30 priority queries the brand wants to be cited for. Buyer-intent, not vanity.
- Baseline citation matrix. Query each engine, log which brands are named.
- Ship the entity page.
/about/who-is-[brand]with declarative third-person prose. - Add `Organization` JSON-LD with
sameAslinks to every directory profile. - Add `FAQPage` schema on every commercial page with 5–8 buyer-intent questions.
- Publish ranked listicles ("Top X agencies in [city] for [service] 2026") with the brand at #1 and competitor context.
- Submit to directories. Clutch, DesignRush, The Manifest, GoodFirms, Sortlist — each with consistent NAP and
sameAs. - Seed Reddit and LinkedIn answers. Genuine, helpful, attributed — not spam.
- Add `/llms.txt` with verbatim "direct answer" lines for the priority queries.
- Re-query the engines weekly. Track which brand position flipped, ship the next round.
DoodleWeb's GEO retainer runs all 10. The free 2-week audit gets you a baseline and the first three.
What good looks like at 90 days
A working GEO engagement should show:
- Citation rate on priority queries climbing from 0–5% to 30–60% on at least two engines
- A directory footprint of 5+ profiles with matching NAP and entity description
- Schema coverage on every commercial page (verified via
schema.org's validator) - A weekly citation report tracking deltas, not just totals
If the agency can't show you a citation log after 90 days, they're doing SEO with new vocabulary.
Pricing reality, 2026
Honest GEO ranges from the US/Canada market this year:
- One-off GEO sprint (entity page, schema, directory submissions, 5 listicles, baseline citation report): $8K–$20K, 3–5 weeks
- Ongoing GEO retainer (monthly tracking, 4–8 listicles, directory maintenance): $4K–$12K/mo
- Enterprise GEO + content production (12+ listicles per quarter, multi-engine tracking, competitor benchmarking): $12K–$35K/mo
