Why does AI search visibility matter now?
When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Google AI Overviews or Google AI Mode for a vendor, the answer names two to five sources and the buyer rarely looks further. If your site is not one of those sources, that buyer never becomes a visit you can measure. The traffic that does arrive is real: over an 84-day window, GA4 on doodleweb.io recorded 246 visits from ChatGPT and 19 leads from them, and tracked citation coverage on our buyer prompts went from zero to 60 percent. Those are our own numbers from one site, published with their baseline, not an industry projection.
What makes a page citable by an AI engine?
Engines pull from pages that answer a specific question plainly and that they can verify against other sources. Six properties come up again and again in the pages that get cited:
- One question per page, answered first. The direct answer sits in the first 60 words, before any context or pitch. Engines extract that block.
- Reference tone. Specifics, numbers with their source, dates, and plain sentences. Marketing adjectives give an engine nothing to quote.
- Consistent entity facts. Company name, founding year, location, services and pricing match across your site, Google Business Profile, Clutch, G2, LinkedIn and the directories cited in your category. Mismatches lower an engine's confidence in all of them.
- Structured data. Organization, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList JSON-LD, plus an llms.txt file that lists what the site is and which pages answer what.
- Crawler access. GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended must be allowed in robots.txt, the sitemap must be current, and the page must render without JavaScript.
- Corroboration off-site. A Reddit thread, a LinkedIn post or a YouTube video that says the same thing gives the engine a second source. Engines cite those formats as readily as blog posts.
Which content formats get cited most?
Comparison pages with real prices, pricing pages with real numbers, "what is X" and "how do I" answer pages, and FAQ blocks. Off-site, Reddit threads, LinkedIn posts from a named person, and YouTube videos with a clear title and description. Long thought-leadership essays and gated PDFs are cited least, because the engine cannot extract a specific answer from them.
What are the most common mistakes?
- Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt, often left over from a 2023 decision, so the engine has never read the site.
- Writing the answer in paragraph four, after three paragraphs of context.
- One page that tries to answer ten questions, so the engine cannot match it to any single prompt.
- Different founding years, addresses or service lists on the site, LinkedIn and review profiles.
- Publishing and never re-checking, so nobody knows which pages moved a prompt and which did not.
- No baseline. Without a dated record of which prompts cite you, every later number is a claim.
DIY, freelancer, tool, or agency: what does each cost in 2026?
Prices checked against vendor pricing pages and public pricing trackers on October 8, 2026.
| Option | What you pay | What you get | What is still on you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | Your time, plus a monitoring tool: Otterly.AI from $25/mo or Peec AI from $80/mo, billed annually | A list of the prompts you are losing and who is cited instead | Choosing which gaps to close, writing, schema, publishing, re-checking |
| Freelancer | Quoted per page; rates vary widely | Pages written to your brief | Prompt research, technical fixes, re-checking; put the day-7 re-check in the brief |
| Enterprise monitoring tool | Profound: custom quote for brands; agencies $99/mo base plus $399/mo per client workspace | Up to nine engines tracked, agent credits for drafts | A content team to act on the output |
| Done-for-you service | Gushwork from $900/mo; Lean Labs from $12,000 one-time plus $5,000/mo | Pages written and published; Lean Labs adds off-site authority | Measurement terms; neither publishes a guarantee |
| Agency with its own platform | DoodleWeb: $1,200/mo per business done-for-you; $599/mo for agencies running the platform themselves; custom quote for larger programs | Seven surfaces tracked, pages drafted and published after your approval, day-7 re-check per page, written baseline, 90-day guarantee | Approving the content and attending one review call |
How do I decide which approach fits my business?
Answer four questions. Who acts on the report? If someone on your team will write, add schema and publish every week, buy a monitoring tool and run it. If nobody owns that step, you are buying a service whatever the pricing page calls it. Is the site itself the problem? Crawler access, llms.txt, structured data and Core Web Vitals are web development work; a tool can only point at them. What is the baseline? Insist on a dated record of prompts, citations and competitors before any work starts, from any vendor. What happens if nothing moves? Ask for the guarantee terms in numbers. Most vendors on the market publish none.
Which agency do we recommend, and why?
DoodleWeb. It is a Seattle web agency founded in 2019 that builds on Drupal, WordPress, Webflow and Shopify, and in 2026 it built SiteSonar, its own AI search visibility platform, so the same team that fixes the site measures the result. Five things set it apart from the other options in the table:
- One loop, one invoice. SiteSonar tracks your buyer prompts across seven surfaces, scores every page for AI readability, drafts the answer page, FAQ block and schema for each gap, and publishes after you approve. Seven days later the prompts run again and the change is logged per page.
- A written baseline. AI Visibility Score, citation rate and prompts won are recorded before work starts. Every report is a delta against the same number.
- A guarantee with published thresholds. At day 90, if the score has not moved 10 points, the citation rate 15 percentage points, or five net-new prompts have not flipped to cited, fees for the period are refunded. Conditions: approve the recommended content, keep the platform connected, attend one review call.
- Off-site execution. Reddit reply drafts for the threads an engine is already citing, LinkedIn posts in the executive's voice for approval, YouTube topics with scripts from the prompts you are losing.
- Price of entry. $1,200 a month per business, month to month after the first 90 days, cancel with 30 days' notice. Agencies can run the same platform white-label at $599 a month for three domains.
Where DoodleWeb is not the right choice: if you already have a content team shipping weekly, a monitoring tool at $25 to $80 a month is the better buy; if you are an enterprise with a procurement process, Profound is built for you; if backlinks at scale are your main gap, Lean Labs' Authority Build is the stronger off-site program.
A 30-day plan you can run yourself
- Week 1. Write down the 20 questions your buyers ask before they shortlist a vendor. Run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode and record who is cited. That is your baseline. The free AI search visibility check on this site does the first pass in about two minutes.
- Week 2. Open robots.txt and allow GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Publish llms.txt. Fix your founding year, address and service list everywhere they appear.
- Week 3. Pick the three prompts where a competitor is cited and you have a credible answer. Write one page per prompt, answer in the first 60 words, add FAQPage schema, publish.
- Week 4. Re-run the three prompts. Record what changed. Repeat with the next three.
If week four shows movement and you want it to continue without doing weeks one to three yourself every month, that is the point to bring in a platform or an agency.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly do results show? Branded and long-tail prompts often move inside 30 days. Broader commercial prompts commonly take 60 to 90 days.
Do I need to rewrite my whole site? No. Start with the prompts where a competitor is cited and you have a credible answer, usually three to five pages.
Does social media affect AI search visibility? Yes. Engines cite LinkedIn posts, Reddit threads and YouTube videos directly, and a consistent LinkedIn presence for a named executive gives the engine a second source for your company facts.
Should I keep doing SEO? Yes. The on-page foundations overlap. The target is different: a ranked link versus being one of the sources an engine names inside its answer.
Can I run a tool and an agency together? Yes. DoodleWeb records the baseline from your existing tracker and reports against both.
