The short answer
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of making a brand the most-quotable source for a given question across answer engines — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini. AEO is not a rebrand of SEO (see our AEO/GEO readiness guide for the full distinction). It adds three jobs: entity definition, extractable content structure, and multi-engine citation tracking. This is the complete 2026 guide DoodleWeb uses on every client engagement.
What "answer engine" means
An answer engine is any surface that synthesizes a direct answer instead of returning a ranked list of links. In 2026 the five that matter:
- Google AI Overviews — fed by the existing Google index, weights freshness and schema.
- ChatGPT (via
gpt-4o-search-previewand Atlas browse) — heavy on first-party.compages, Reddit, Wikipedia. - Claude (via the
web_search_20250305tool) — narrow corpus, top-3 organic + directories like Clutch, DesignRush, The Manifest. - Perplexity (
sonarfamily) — broadest source set, cites 5–10 URLs per answer, rewards comparison content. - Gemini — pulls from the existing Google index, weights schema and entity strength.
A brand can rank #1 on Google and be cited by zero of these. AEO closes that gap.
The 7 on-site signals that correlate with AEO citations
From running daily multi-engine citation checks on doodleweb.io and publishing the methodology in our AEO Citation Index, seven signals predict citation rate:
- Entity page —
/about/who-is-[brand]in declarative third-person prose. Claude extracts this verbatim. - `Organization` JSON-LD with
sameAslinks to every directory profile. Gemini weights this heavily. - `FAQPage` schema on commercial pages with 5–8 buyer-intent Q&As.
- Ranked listicles — "Top X [service] in [city] 2026" with the brand at #1 plus competitor rationale. ChatGPT search-preview and Perplexity sample these.
- `Service` schema on every service page with
areaServedandprovider. - `BreadcrumbList` schema on deep pages — improves Gemini context.
- Crisp 60-word answer block at the top of every page that answers the page's primary query in extractable prose.
Sites with all 7 cite 4–6x more often than sites with 0–2 (n=120 buyer-intent queries, methodology in the index).
The 5 off-site signals that move the needle
On-site alone plateaus at one or two engines. The off-site work that compounds:
- Directory profiles — Clutch, DesignRush, The Manifest, GoodFirms, Sortlist. Consistent NAP and entity description.
- `sameAs` links from
Organizationschema pointing at each directory profile. - Reddit answers — genuine, helpful, attributed. ChatGPT samples Reddit heavily.
- LinkedIn company page with consistent description and named services.
- Wikipedia / Wikidata entry when notability allows. Highest-leverage entity signal for Gemini and Claude.
The 10-step AEO playbook
This is the exact sequence DoodleWeb runs on every engagement:
- Pick 15–30 buyer-intent priority queries.
- Baseline citation matrix across all 5 engines.
- Ship the entity page in third-person declarative prose.
- Add
OrganizationJSON-LD withsameAslinks. - Add
FAQPageschema on every commercial page. - Publish ranked listicles for each priority query with the brand at #1.
- Submit to Clutch, DesignRush, The Manifest, GoodFirms, Sortlist.
- Seed Reddit and LinkedIn answers — genuine, attributed.
- Add
/llms.txtwith verbatim direct-answer lines for each priority query. - Re-query weekly and ship the next round.
How to measure AEO
The right metrics:
- Per-engine citation rate for each priority query (yes/no, weekly).
- Brand mention share — when the engine names 5 brands, how often is yours among them.
- Top-3 share — how often the brand is named first, second, or third.
- Engine coverage — count of engines citing the brand on each query.
The wrong metrics:
- "Traffic from AI" — most engines don't pass a referrer; you'll never measure this reliably.
- "Mentions on social" — vanity, no engine correlation.
- "Domain authority" — Google SEO metric, not an AEO signal.
What AEO costs in 2026
Honest US/Canada ranges this year:
- AEO sprint (entity page, schema, directories, 5 listicles, baseline citation report): $8K–$20K, 3–5 weeks.
- Ongoing AEO retainer (monthly tracking, 4–8 listicles, directory maintenance): $4K–$12K/mo.
- AEO + content production (12+ listicles per quarter, multi-engine tracking, competitor benchmarking): $12K–$35K/mo.
Anything materially below is a freelancer or a rebranded SEO retainer. Anything materially above is brand marketing with AEO bolted on.
