Seattle Map Pack Rankings: What Changed This Month

''' Just when you get comfortable, Google changes the local search algorithm. This month, we are seeing clear shifts in how Google ranks businesses in the Seattle "map pack" — the three local results shown below the map in a search.

Two factors appear to have gained significant weight: review recency and the searcher's physical proximity.

Why did my rankings drop in Seattle?

If your Google Business Profile rankings have been volatile, it likely comes down to reviews. While the total number of reviews is still a factor, our client data shows a clear preference for businesses with *recent* reviews. A business in Fremont with 100 reviews but none in the last month is now being outranked by a competitor with 50 reviews, including several from the past two weeks.

Google wants to show users what is relevant *now*. A steady stream of positive feedback tells the algorithm your business is active and currently providing a good customer experience.

How does proximity affect rankings?

Proximity has always been a cornerstone of local search, but its influence seems to be narrowing. The algorithm is giving much stronger preference to businesses hyper-local to the searcher. A search for "web design" from a coffee shop in Ballard is now more likely to surface agencies in Ballard or Fremont, even if a more authoritative agency is located downtown.

This means businesses in Bellevue will have a harder time ranking for Seattle-center searches, and vice-versa. You can't just be the best in the Puget Sound region; you have to be the best in the immediate neighborhood of the searcher.

We have seen this play out for our clients. A Bellevue-based attorney who previously ranked well for "Seattle injury lawyer" saw a dip in traffic from Seattle proper, while their Bellevue-based queries strengthened.

What should we do now?

Based on these changes, here is our guidance:

  • Double down on reviews. Implement a simple, consistent process for requesting reviews from happy clients. Don't batch your requests; aim for a steady, natural flow every month.
  • Create location-specific content. If you serve multiple areas, create service pages on your website for each one. For example, instead of just a "Services" page, create "Web Design in Ballard" and "eCommerce for Fremont Businesses" pages. Mention specific local details, like projects near Gas Works Park or work for clients in the Pike Place Market area.
  • Refine your service areas. In your Google Business Profile, ensure your listed service areas are accurate. Don't over-extend your reach. Focus on the neighborhoods and cities you genuinely serve.

Keeping up with Google's algorithm is a continuous process. These small, consistent efforts are what separate businesses that thrive in local search from those that stagnate.
