How to Hire a Shopify Developer in Seattle (2026)

Hiring a Shopify developer in Seattle in 2026 is harder than it looks. The local talent pool is thin compared to general WordPress developers, rates have risen sharply since 2024, and most listings on UpWork and Fiverr will not survive a real ecommerce launch. This guide walks you through your real options.

When you actually need a Shopify developer

You need one when:

  • You are migrating from BigCommerce, Magento, or WooCommerce to Shopify.
  • You need a custom theme or significant Liquid customization beyond what a $200 ThemeForest theme can do.
  • You are integrating Shopify with Klaviyo, Recharge, an ERP, or a custom backend.
  • You are building a Shopify Plus build with checkout extensibility, B2B features, or markets.
  • Your existing theme has accumulated technical debt and is slowing down.

You do not need a developer for simple theme installs, basic product uploads, or routine app installs.

Your four hiring options

/1. A Seattle Shopify agency

Cost: $20k–$120k+ per project, or $10k–$30k per month on retainer. Best for: Mid-market and Shopify Plus brands, complex migrations, brands that need design and development on the same team.

Agencies in the Seattle area that handle Shopify well: DoodleWeb (WordPress, Drupal, and Shopify with an AEO and SEO focus), Storm Brain (e-commerce design), and a handful of US-wide Shopify Plus partners with Pacific Northwest presence like Eastside Co and Underwaterpistol.

/2. A senior independent contractor

Cost: $90–$200/hour. Senior Shopify Plus contractors with checkout extensibility experience are at the top of that range. Best for: A specific scoped build (theme work, an integration, a migration) where you have a clear spec.

Finding them: LinkedIn search filtered to Seattle area, the Shopify Partners directory, referrals from your local ecommerce community.

/3. A staff augmentation arrangement

Cost: $7k–$15k per month for a senior offshore Shopify developer, $15k–$25k for a US-based senior. Best for: Ongoing work where you need a developer attached to your team but do not want to hire full-time.

This is the model DoodleWeb provides as "hire a Shopify developer" — a dedicated senior engineer on a monthly engagement, managed by us.

/4. A direct full-time hire

Cost: $130k–$190k base salary in Seattle for a senior Shopify developer in 2026. Best for: Brands with $10M+ in Shopify revenue where the developer will be busy full-time for the next two years.

What to avoid

Avoid Fiverr or low-end UpWork for anything beyond a $500 theme tweak. Avoid agencies that claim Shopify, WordPress, and Webflow are all "the same thing." Avoid any developer who cannot show you live Shopify storefronts they personally built.

Interview questions that filter signal from noise

  1. Show me three live Shopify storefronts you built or significantly customized.
  2. Walk me through how you would override the cart drawer in Dawn 2024+.
  3. How do you handle theme deploys — direct in admin, GitHub integration, or CLI?
  4. What's your approach to performance — page weight, Largest Contentful Paint, theme-level optimization?
  5. Tell me about a Shopify project that went wrong and how you handled it.
  6. Have you worked with checkout extensibility on Shopify Plus?
  7. What's your Klaviyo, Recharge, or Yotpo experience?
  8. How do you handle a B2B catalog with customer-specific pricing?
  9. What's your AEO and SEO approach for product and collection pages?
  10. Who will own QA before launch?

Pricing reality check for 2026

| Job | Typical price | |---|---| | Custom theme build on Dawn or a premium base | $15k–$45k | | Custom theme from scratch | $40k–$120k+ | | Migration to Shopify from another platform | $25k–$150k depending on complexity | | Klaviyo flows + Shopify integration | $4k–$12k | | Headless / Hydrogen build | $80k–$300k+ | | Ongoing maintenance retainer | $2k–$8k/month |

How to make the decision

If you have one defined project, hire a senior contractor or a small agency. If you have ongoing work but not enough for a full-time hire, use staff augmentation. If you have a Shopify Plus brand with continuous backlog, hire full-time and supplement with an agency for the harder pieces. Most Seattle brands under $5M in revenue should not be hiring full-time Shopify developers — the work is too lumpy.
