''' As a senior-only team, we don’t need to say “yes” to every web design project that comes our way. We’re not trying to grow for growth’s sake. We are a small, experienced team focused on doing good work for good people. That means we have a filter. We say “yes” to about half the projects that come across our desk.
We say "no" for a few reasons. Sometimes the business is not viable. Sometimes the client’s expectations are unrealistic. Occasionally, we can tell a client doesn’t trust our expertise. We prefer to identify these mismatches early. It saves everyone time and money. It also lets us focus on the clients we can truly help—the ones who value a partnership built on experience.
Are You Good People?
This is the simplest filter. We work with people we respect and enjoy. We look for clients who are professional, collaborative, and treat our team with courtesy. A project is a partnership. We have built websites for Seattle-area law firms, Bellevue-based financial advisors, and Tacoma manufacturing companies. The common thread is mutual respect.
We once had a potential client show up late to our initial video call, dismiss our project manager’s introduction, and then demand a complete proposal within 24 hours. This was a clear signal that they did not see us as partners. We politely declined. A bad client relationship sours the work and leads to a worse outcome.
Is the Business Viable?
A beautiful website for a flawed business model is just lipstick on a pig. We need to believe in your business. We look for a clear value proposition, a defined target audience, and a basic understanding of your market. We’re not expecting a perfected business plan, but we need to see a foundation we can build on.
For example, a startup approached us to build a complex eCommerce platform for handmade goods. They wanted to compete with Etsy but had no answer for how they would attract sellers or buyers. Their budget was for the website, not for the marketing required to build a two-sided marketplace. We explained the challenge and suggested they start with a smaller, more focused MVP. They insisted on the original scope, so we passed.
Are Your Expectations Realistic?
Experience teaches you what’s possible. Many clients come to us with a budget and timeline that don’t match their vision. They want a custom-built site with complex integrations for the price and timeline of a simple WordPress template. Our job is to educate. We can almost always find a phased approach that works, starting with a core set of features and adding more over time.
We believe in honest conversations about budget and scope from day one. A $15,000 budget does not buy a $100,000 website. A four-week timeline does not accommodate deep user research and custom development.
We will walk you through the trade-offs. We might suggest a robust WordPress or Drupal site using pre-built components to maximize a smaller budget, rather than a fully custom build. If a client is unwilling to adjust their expectations or budget, we know the project is set up to fail. We would rather say "no" upfront than deliver a disappointing result.
Will You Trust Our Expertise?
You are hiring us for our 20+ years of experience. We expect you to be the expert on your business. We expect to be the expert on web design, development, and digital strategy. The best projects happen when clients trust our process.
A Bellevue-based wealth management firm came to us with a very specific design in mind, created by an intern in Canva. It was visually busy and ignored basic usability principles. We spent our first meeting walking them through user experience best practices, showing examples of competitor sites, and explaining our design process. They understood, put their trust in our team, and the final site was a massive success for them.
Micromanagement, ignoring professional advice, or trying to art-direct every detail signals a lack of trust. If our expertise isn’t valued, we can’t deliver the results you’re paying for.
Saying "no" isn’t about arrogance. It’s about honesty and a commitment to quality. We want every project to be a success story. Filtering for the right fit is the first and most important step. It ensures we can dedicate our senior-level attention to clients who are ready for a true partnership.
