Magento to Shopify Plus migration: a complete guide

Magento to Shopify Plus is the most common replatform of 2026, driven by Magento 2 end-of-life pressure, hosting cost, developer scarcity, and the security burden of running the platform. A well-run migration protects revenue, keeps SEO intact, and lands in 12 to 20 weeks. A bad one loses 20 to 40 percent of organic traffic in the first three months. Here's the playbook.

Why teams are leaving Magento

Four forces are pushing merchants off Magento in 2026.

  • Magento 2 end-of-life runway. Adobe support for Magento 2 continues, but community and extension maintenance is thinning quickly. Every year you stay adds tech debt.
  • Hosting cost. A production Magento 2 stack (application server, Redis, Elasticsearch, database, media) runs $2K to $10K a month before you touch Adobe Commerce licensing.
  • Developer scarcity. The pool of senior Magento developers is shrinking. Hourly rates are climbing. Hiring is a real problem.
  • Security burden. Magento is one of the most-attacked ecommerce platforms. Patch cycles are frequent and skipping one costs you.

Shopify Plus removes all four. Managed infrastructure, native scaling, a growing developer pool, and platform-level security.

What migrates

Every Magento to Shopify Plus project handles the same eight buckets.

  1. Products and variants (SKUs, attributes, images, inventory, metafields).
  2. Categories and collections (with URL structure preserved where possible).
  3. Orders and order history (customer-facing history matters).
  4. Customers and passwords (Shopify supports Magento password hashes for silent migration).
  5. Content pages, blog posts, and media.
  6. URL redirects — every Magento URL that had traffic in the last 12 months gets a 301.
  7. Reviews (via Yotpo, Okendo, or a bulk import).
  8. Integrations rebuilt against Shopify's APIs.

Realistic timeline

  • Simple catalog under 1,000 SKUs, no B2B: 12 to 16 weeks.
  • Complex catalog with configurable products and custom attributes: 16 to 20 weeks.
  • Multi-store, multi-language, or B2B: 20 to 28 weeks.

Anything shorter is aggressive. Anything longer usually means scope creep.

The 6-step process

  1. Discovery and audit. Full Magento inventory: products, orders, customers, custom attributes, extensions, integrations, and URL structure. Traffic and revenue audit to identify the top 500 URLs by both.
  2. Data mapping. Field-by-field mapping from Magento's EAV model into Shopify's flat model. Metafields configured for anything that doesn't fit.
  3. Theme and app build. Shopify Plus theme built to match brand and UX. Apps selected for gaps (subscriptions, reviews, loyalty, PIM sync, ERP).
  4. Staged migration. Data migrated into a preview store. QA on catalog, checkout, and integrations before touching production.
  5. Redirect and SEO planning. Every top-traffic Magento URL mapped to a Shopify equivalent with a 301. Sitemap regenerated. Schema and canonical tags verified.
  6. Hypercare cutover. DNS switch, integrations flipped, monitoring turned up. Daily standups for two weeks post-launch.

Redirect and SEO strategy

This is where most Magento migrations fail on organic traffic.

  • Pull the top 500 to 1,000 URLs by traffic from Search Console. Map each one to a Shopify URL.
  • Configure 301s at the Shopify level (Navigation → URL Redirects) or via the CDN.
  • Regenerate the sitemap and submit to Search Console the day of cutover.
  • Verify canonical tags, product schema, and breadcrumbs against Rich Results Test.
  • Monitor Search Console daily for the first 30 days. Fix crawl errors as they surface.

Sites that skip this lose 20 to 40 percent of organic traffic in the first quarter. Sites that do it well lose 5 percent or less and recover inside 60 days.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the redirect audit. Every Magento URL without a redirect is a 404 the day of cutover.
  • No data reconciliation. Product counts, order totals, and customer counts must match before you go live.
  • Over-customizing checkout. Shopify's checkout converts better than a custom one. Only extend it where you have a specific reason.
  • Migrating dirty product data. Fix the catalog before it lands in Shopify. It's easier there than after.
  • Rushing cutover to hit a season. Never cut over inside BFCM, tax season, or a major campaign window.

Cost expectations

  • Simple Magento to Shopify Plus migration: $50,000 to $80,000.
  • Complex migration with B2B or multi-store: $80,000 to $150,000.
  • Headless Plus with Magento migration: $150,000 to $250,000.
