What Changed in Google's Seattle Map Pack Rankings This Month?

_Our senior SEO strategist, Maria, has been analyzing recent local search volatility. Here’s her analysis of what changed for businesses in Seattle, Bellevue, and across the Puget Sound region._

This month, Google rolled out a significant update to its local search ranking algorithm. The changes directly impact how businesses appear in the "Map Pack," the block of three business listings that appear at the top of the results for local queries.

We tracked ranking fluctuations across several hundred of our clients' Google Business Profiles (GBPs) in the Seattle metro area. The pattern is clear: Google is placing an even heavier emphasis on user proximity and the granular details within a business profile.

What Changed With Local Pack Rankings?

The update appears to have two main components. First, the geographic radius for many search terms has tightened. A user searching for "plumber" in Capitol Hill is now less likely to see a result from a business located in Ballard or West Seattle, even if that business has more reviews or a historically stronger backlink profile.

Second, the algorithm is rewarding profiles that utilize more of Google Business Profile's features. This includes regularly updated photos, active Q&A sections, frequent Google Posts, and detailed service menus. Businesses that had "set it and forget it" profiles saw the most negative impact.

We saw a client, a dental practice in downtown Bellevue, jump from position 5 to position 2 in their local pack. This was after we spent an afternoon updating their service descriptions and adding new high-resolution photos of their office and team. Their competition, meanwhile, had not updated their profile in over a year and dropped out of the top 3.

How Does This Affect My Business?

For businesses in competitive Seattle neighborhoods like Fremont, South Lake Union, or even outlying cities like Everett and Tacoma, these changes mean you can no longer rely on a primary office location alone. The "best" result is now more hyperlocal than ever.

If you have a strong review profile but your GBP is sparse, you are vulnerable to being outranked by a competitor who is physically closer to the searcher and has a more complete profile.

Conversely, this is an opportunity. Businesses that have felt stuck behind entrenched competitors now have a path to visibility. By focusing on a feature-rich Google Business Profile and encouraging reviews from customers in specific neighborhoods, you can carve out a niche in your immediate service area.

  • Proximity is paramount: The searcher's location is more important than ever.
  • Profile completeness is critical: Use every relevant feature in your GBP.
  • Reviews still matter: But their geographic context may be weighed more heavily.
  • Website authority is secondary: For Map Pack rankings, your GBP is now the first battleground, not your website's domain authority.

What Should I Do Now?

First, audit your Google Business Profile. When was the last time you uploaded a photo? Have you answered all the questions in your Q&A section? Are your services, hours, and contact information 100% accurate?

Second, create a strategy for generating localized content within your profile. Post updates about work you're doing in specific Seattle neighborhoods. Add photos from job sites in Renton or Kent. If a customer in Pioneer Square leaves a review, that sends a powerful local signal.

Finally, monitor your rankings not just by city, but by neighborhood. Understanding how you appear to a customer in the University District versus one in the International District is key to adapting your local SEO strategy.

This isn't a temporary shift. It is the continuation of Google's push to provide the most contextually relevant results for users on the go. Businesses that adapt to this hyperlocal reality will win the battle for local customers.
