Why a Custom Website Costs More Than a $99 Template

Your business is unique. It has specific goals, customers, and operational challenges. So why would a generic, one-size-fits-all website template work for you?

Many business owners see ads for $99/month websites and wonder why a custom build from a studio like ours costs significantly more. It’s a fair question, but it compares two completely different things.

A $99 template site is a lease. You pay a monthly fee for a pre-built design that hundreds, if not thousands, of other businesses are also using. It's like renting a small office in a massive, generic office park. It gets you a physical address, but it does nothing to set you apart.

Do template sites solve business problems?

No. Template sites are passive brochures. They don't account for your specific sales process, your customer's journey, or your operational workflow.

We recently worked with a Bellevue-based commercial real estate firm. Their old template site had a generic "Contact Us" form that generated a high volume of low-quality inquiries from residential renters. Their staff wasted hours each week sifting through junk leads.

We built them a custom site with a multi-step, conditional logic form that specifically filtered for commercial clients looking for warehouse and office space. Lead quality instantly improved, and their team reclaimed valuable time. A template can't do that.

Are you buying an asset or renting a liability?

A custom website is a business asset. You own it. It is built specifically to address your challenges and achieve your goals. It’s a tool designed to increase revenue, improve efficiency, and build your brand.

Consider a Tacoma-based logistics company we partnered with. They needed to integrate their site with a proprietary freight tracking system. This was impossible with their old Squarespace template. We built a custom solution that not only integrated perfectly but also presented the tracking information in a way that was far more user-friendly for their clients. The result was fewer support calls and higher customer satisfaction.

That's the difference. A custom site solves problems and creates value. A template site just occupies a URL.

"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."

What are the hidden costs of a cheap website?

The $99/month price tag is just the beginning. Need specific functionality? That’s an extra fee. Want to rank on Google? You'll need to hire an SEO specialist because templates are often bloated and slow. Frustrated with the limited design? You're stuck.

These limitations become business liabilities. A slow, generic site will bleed customers. A site that doesn’t reflect the quality of your brand—whether you’re a law firm in downtown Seattle or a high-end contractor in the Eastside—damages your credibility.

We don't sell templates because we don't believe in temporary, low-impact solutions. We build strategic assets for established businesses ready to invest in their growth. The conversation isn't about which is "cheaper." It's about which is more profitable.

If you want a website that works as hard as you do, we should talk. We can start with a free website audit to show you what's possible.
